Another Attempt to Crackdown on Shia Dawa

There seems to be an attempted crackdown on Shia Dawa spreading across the Sunni majority countries. Frankly I'm really mad because this does nothing to help Muslim Unity. Even though I believe now is not the time to be discussing difference between Shias and Sunnis, it does not permit such a crackdown. Also there was such an issue in Sudan. I have noted it here.

This message from Shaheed Muhammad Baqir Sadr, killed in 1981 for making it forbidden on Muslims to join the Baath Party and called for Jihad against the Baath Party and Saddam Hussein, on Islamic Unity is truly useful in todays Iraq quagmire.

This is the last message before the Ba’athists in Iraq executed him on April 9, 1980, along with his sister and hundreds of his supporters.

"Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the world, and peace and blessing be upon Prophet Muhammad, his purified family and guided companions.

O’ my dear Iraqi people:

I talk to you all, Sunnis and Shias, Arabs and Kurds, at this acute moment of your crisis and Jihadi life, because the crisis doesn’t belong to one sect or group. And since the crisis is the crisis of all Iraqi people, the brave reaction and the struggle must become the reality of all the Iraqi people.

Since I knew my existence (being) and responsibility towards the Ummah, I have spent this existence for the sake of the brotherhood of Shias and Sunnis, Arabs and Kurds. I defend the message, which unifies all of them. And the belief which embraces all of them.

I lived with my thought and being, only for Islam – the way of freedom and the aim of all. Thus I am with you, my Sunni brother and son, as much as I am with you, my Shia brother and son. I am with both of you as much as you are with Islam, and as much as you carry this great torch to save Iraq from the nightmare of oppression and injustice.

The tyrants and their allies are trying to make our righteous Sunni sons believe that the problem is a Sunni-Shia one in order to separate them from their battle against the common enemy.

I want to say to you, the sons of Ali and Hussain, the sons of Abu Bakr and Umar, that the battle is not between the Shia and the Sunni rule. The Sunni rule, which was represented by the guided khalafa, caused Imam Ali to carry the sword defending it in the battles of the Apostates under the leadership of Abu Bakr. We must all defend the Islamic flag whatever its sectarian colour.

Half a century ago, the Shia ulema issued their fatwas making it a Jihad to defend the Sunni rule, which was carrying the Islamic banner and hundreds of thousands of Shia went out to the battlefield shedding their blood to protect the Islamic motto. The actual rule today is not a Sunni rule although the people at the top belong historically to the Sunni branch of Islam.

Sunni rule doesn’t mean the rule of a person, who has descended from Sunni parents, but it means the rule of Abu Bakr and Umar, which has been challenged by the tyrant rulers of Iraq today in all their practices. They abuse Islam, they abuse Ali and Umar together, violate Islam every day in every step they take.

O’ my sons and brothers, the sons of Mosul, Bassrah, the sons of Baghdad, Karbala and Najaf, the sons of Saerra and Kadhimiyah, the sons of Amarah, Kut and Sulemaniyah, the sons of Iraq everywhere.

I promise you all that I am for all of you, for the sake of all of you, and that you are my aim in the present and the future. Your words must unite, and your plans must be unified under motto of Islam, for the sake of saving Iraq from the nightmare of this authoritarian rule, building a free, glamorous Iraq, brightened by the justice of Islam, and covered by the dignity of man. In this Iraq, citizens with all their nationalities and sects will feel that they are brothers and will all contribute in the leadership of their country, building their home and realizing their Islamic ideas and the dawn of our glamorous history."

Lahoud Holds His Ground

I really do like Lebanese President Emile Lahoud. He has stood up for the Resistance and has constantly balked at the ruling party and feverishly opposes US and French intervention in Lebanon. The ruling party, which is now unconstitutional since the Shia ministers and their allies stepped down, has been trying to get him to abdicate power but that wont happen anytime soon. His term ends in November of 2007.

Also Arab League Secretary General Amr Mussa has failed to reach a compromise. I think its because in the end of the day the Arab League holds no weight and the people and the governments of the region do not trust it. Its a very weak organization and really you cant expect too much when its leading members are a bunch of dictators like Abdullah of Jordan and the Land of Hijaz [I refuse to call it Saudi Arabia because it is named after the ruling family which in theory owns all the land] as well of Mubarek of Egypt who has been in power since 1981. If only we had more Lahouds as leaders. Where would the the Arab and Muslim world be?

If what he says in the article is how he operates I wouldnt blame them for going after the terrorists and Wahabi's because the government is not protecting the innocent Shia. But frankly I highly doubt that is the case.

White House Stifles Dissent

As we have seen in the past, the White House is once again in the headlines for stifling debate on a very important issue.

The Iraq Study Group came out with its recommendations recently, of which one of the most important I believe is opening up channels of dialogue with the Islamic Republic of Iran and Syria. This goes a long way in bringing sensitive issues between the two countries to the table. It is my firm belief that if this happens the chances of war are minimized and the chicken hawks in the Bush White House lose all clout in starting a war.

Since the Bush Administration wants none of that and unfortunately seems hell bent on confronting Iran militarily while maintaining its stubbornness it is no surprise that I read this article in the International Herald Tribune.

Asalaamu Alaikum [May the Peace of Allah, The Most High, Be Upon You]

This blog is the culmination of constant pondering into creating an online media that discusses issues in the Muslim World in general, and in the Shia World in specific. Inshallah this will allow myself and others come to a critical understanding of what is happening in this fast changing world.

Six years ago before the 9/11 attacks nobody cared about Islam and Muslims and even though there was discrimination and islamophobia no one could have imagined it would come to this. But my how things have changed.

Before Iraq who knew the difference between Shia and Sunni. Its amazing how the will of Allah creates conditions for all those who are ignorant of this great faith to hear and question. Albeit it may not be in the best of contexts in hearing about militias and Al-Qaeda but in the end everyone must judge for themselves and truly go through a process of self struggle, oh I mean jihad, in understanding the greatest faith the world has ever known.
